Taliban claim to arrest CIA agent
ISLAMABAD: Afghanistan's Taliban on Saturday claimed to have
arrested a CIA agent on the Spin Buldock mountains near the
Pakistan border. A Taliban official identified the arrested American intelligence agent
as Major Mazhar Ayub. The militia official, Qari Abdul Wakil, told BBC that Ayub was
identified from the documents recovered from him.
He said the CIA agent was arrested when he entered Spin Buldock
from Pakistan's border at Chamman. The militia recovered from him
maps of Afghanistan and other information and books on Afghanistan.
"He also has some electronic equipment with which he might be
providing information to the US and other military sections," he said.
Ayub served in the US Army from 1971 to 1991. He has also fought
during the Vietnam war besides having worked for the CNN network
from 1992 to 1998, Wakil said, adding that after 1998 Ayub visited
Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar where he recently worked with the
UNCHR in the refugee camps. The Taliban official said Ayub was giving information to the
Americans and other western countries about movements of militia
troops. Wakil claimed that when the militia caught the CIA agent, he
described himself as a journalist. "When his body search was carried out, some other materials were
recovered from him. That is why, the Taliban suspected him and
arrested him," he said. Taliban have kept Ayub at a secret place. "He is now under
interrogation," he said. Wakil said Ayub's two American colleagues,
John and Mong, were living in a Quetta hotel and that they had
helped the CIA agent enter Afghanistan. ( PTI )
