- Editor]

Malaysian floods prompt city rethink

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- In the wake of another flood that swept the capital, Malaysian authorities have responded by announcing 27 flood mitigation projects.

Federal government funding to the tune of RM135 million (US$35.5 million) is to be directed to a range of projects expected to be completed by September 2003, Malaysia's New Straits Times newspaper reported.

The main project under the package concerns building an underground drainage system.

Kuala Lumpur was hit Monday by flash flooding less than six months after the worst floods in 30 years hit the city center on April 26.

Following a fierce thunderstorm that lasted for two hours, major parts of the city centre were submerged in water, damaging properties and causing massive traffic jams.

About 100 cars were also submerged in water at various locations in the city centre as the flood waters rose quickly.

The hardest hit area was Kampung Periuk in Kampung Baru where some 40 families were evacuated after water rose to two metres, the New Straits Times reported.

Other areas hit by the floods included Jalan Dang Wangi, Jalan Munshi Abdullah, Jalan Masjid India and Jalan Melaka.

Charge America for killing civilians says Malaysia

Tuesday, October 30, 2001 at 19:30 JST KUALA LUMPUR - A Malaysian cabinet minister wants the United States to be brought before the International Court of Justice to face charges of causing the deaths of innocent civilians in its military campaign against Afghanistan's ruling Taliban, the New Straits Times reported Tuesday.

Labeling the U.S. a "terrorizing state," the de facto law minister Rais Yatim was quoted as saying that Malaysia should initiate the tabling of a resolution in the United Nations and the filing of a petition to bring the U.S. to the ICJ, the report said. (Kyodo News)
